My baby bearded dragon bites?

we had him for 2 weeks now & he has bitten us all (4 of us) he likes to be held once we catch him. we are able to rub his head however he tries to bite us if we go anywere near his face/chin. He tries to lunge at us whenever we put our hand in his tank to feed or clean it. we did get him at the pet store he was about 5inches long. “what’s a mom to do?”

This isn’t unusual with petshop bough beardies. They order or breed them in large numbers to sale and dont have time to properly handle them as a private breeder would.

I suggest you have daily sessions where you handle and rub it for about 15 minutes. Eventually as with any other pet it will get used to being held and rubbed and not bite you.

When it lunges at you in its cage don’t give in a jerk your hand out. This is just teaching it that you will run away if it shows aggression. Be persistent.

In the event that your beardie does bite you DO NOT jerk away. This may be very hard to do but jerking away can cause their teeth to break.

I also suggest you try hand feeding for a while, this should help it realize that hands are nice not mean and you arnt going to hurt it.

The bearded dragon got its name from the spiky flap of skin around its snout. The flap puffs up like a bristly beard when the bearded dragon feels threatened. But the bearded dragon is not nearly as ferocious as it, looks, preferring to run away rather than get into a fight. Natives of the Australian interior, these lizards are popular pets.
