Is uvb light fixture sufficient for bearded dragon EXPERTS?
I have a CorraLife 36in fixture that came with a 51in long by 15 7/8 in wide by 23 in deep. The light is supposed to give off UVB rays, but are they too bright for my bearded dragon? How would i know? I Know that the coil lights used to cause blindness because of their high amount of uvb output.
Ok it’s time to back up a bit – lots of partial info has confused things.
First off the older compact fluorescent UVB’s and blindness. There were a lot of concerns when the coil UVB lights came onto the scene – especially since so many companies were putting them out and the UVB was not real consistent (too high too low – plain old too erratic). This was all part of the compact coil issue – if the current data is correct this has been resolved – at least for some manufacturers bulbs. A few years back it was the zoo med bulbs (compact coil only) associated with the photokeratoconjunctivitis (herp blindness due to lighting). next came concerns with exo terras and eventually zillas (zilla would be the herp bulb produced by the caoralife company that you reference.
As to the ‘how would you know piece – check out the independents UK uvb testing site linked through this forum discussing the issue http://www.turtleforum.com/forum/upload/index.php?showtopic=113523
Now for the easier part – If you have a long tube shaped bulb – not a coil – things get safer and easier (these type bulbs have been around for much longer and provided they have been handled correctly by the seller/store you got it from the UVB is rated pretty consistently for the first 3 months – gone by 6 months so you need a new bulb).
The easy answer go for the long tubes or suck it up money wise and get a mvb.
2 issues for your current bulb – type? and is it really a uvb or merely an aquarium full spectrum bulb. If it is marketed for aquaria it won’t have the vit d producing uvb needed by your dragon.
If it is the coralife zilla type bulb and a long tube – check the rating and you are good to go.
I applaud your concern – for what it’s worth keepers who provide a good strong thermogradient and adequate hide areas (basically give your dragon a range of options to choose from that is as large as possible habitat wise) suffer far less issues related to equipment failure and malfunction – it’s the smaller tighter setups that must be absolutely perfect to protect the animals health.
Keep reading and researching and you and your dragon will surely do well.

Bearded Dragon : 0823964124 $1.97 The bearded dragon got its name from the spiky flap of skin around its snout. The flap puffs up like a bristly beard when the bearded dragon feels threatened. But the bearded dragon is not nearly as ferocious as it, looks, preferring to run away rather than get into a fight. Natives of the Australian interior, these lizards are popular pets. |
