Question about the Bearded Dragon?(Lizard)?
I’ve been thinking about getting one, I already have a 10 gallon tank but I don’t think it’d be enough to sustain one. I was just wondering what I need to set up a proper terrarium, how big the enclosure, heating, etc. etc. And I’m a little skittish on how to clean up the poop, after seeing some pictures they look kinda big and hard to clean up after. So overall how much do you think the proper setup for a bearded dragon will cost?
If you’re sqeamish about cleaning feces – you don’t need a dragon. As a healthy adult, he’ll leave you 1-3 large “cow pies” a day to deal with. But – he’s worth the bit of mess. They make wonderful pets.
You can simplify this chore by using slightly textured ceramic tile (not smooth or gloss) as the substrate. Just remove the soiled tile, wash, dry and return. Or keep an extra one on hand to swap out for the soiled one as needed.
You can start a baby in a 10 gal. but he’ll outgrow it pretty quickly. Your dragon will eventually need a 40 gal. breeder or 75 gal. tank (55′s are only 12″ wide and aren’t large enough for a 18-24″ dragon to turn around in).
You’ll need:
–Substrate (paper towels, aged newspaper 2 wk. or more, non-adhesive shelf line, short nap reptile carpet or ceramic tile)

–Tank
–Florescent tube 10.0 desert UVB bulb (ZooMed is the only safe brand – it doesn’t output in the low frequency range that causes eye irritation or blindness). No compact bulbs are safe, including ZooMed.

–Strip/hood-type lamp for the UVB bulb
–Dome/clamp lamp
–Household incandescent bulb or a reptile heat bulb.
–Perch
–Salad bowl
–Small water bowl
–Mist bottle
–Calcium powder with D3

–Reptile vitamins (phospherous free)
–Cricket keeper (to gut load his insects)
–Temperature gun (I recommend the one with the aiming laser)

–Thermostat (optional, but makes life nice)
–Timer (optional, but makes life nice)
If your room temperature falls below 70 at night, you will need either a UTH pad or a ceramic heat emitter for night heat. Dragons can see the red and blue spectrums so night bulbs are not recommended for BDs.
Price will vary wildly on if you buy this all new and where you purchase it from. You can check www.petmountain.com and www.lllreptile.com as well as your local stores.
Good luck and enjoy your new pet.
