It is extremely important that you provide your beardie with proper lighting. Without it, he will suffer numerous health problems. Bearded dragons need UVA and UVB.

Without UVB light, your dragon won’t be able to manufacture his own vitamin D3. This prevents him from digesting calcium which will eventually lead to metabolic bone disease. There are several options you have when looking for a UVB source.

Some UVB sources don’t generate heat, so you will need to buy a heat lamp to make up for it. If you want something that produces both heat and UVB rays, you should consider buying mercury vapor bulbs. They are more expensive, but you won’t have to buy a lamp for additional heat.

Whichever option you choose, you should know that you will need to replace the light after six months or so. The source will still continue shining light. However, the production of UVB will be severely diminished after approximately six months. It’s also important that you place the light no more than 12 inches from your dragon’s basking spot.

No UVB source on the planet is as good as natural sunlight. So, you should try to take your bearded dragon outside whenever you get the chance. Just make sure that the ambient temperature is above 70 degrees Fahrenheit before you take him out. If you have an outside enclosure for him, always provide him with a hiding place and some shade.

Many owners put their dragon’s enclosure beside a window so he gets some sunlight. You should be aware that this is ineffective. The window’s glass will either reflect or filter the UVB rays before they even reach your beardie. If the vivarium is made from glass, it too will prevent the sun’s UVB rays from reaching him.

Although you’ll need an overhead light source, you’ll also need a lid on the vivarium to prevent your dragon from escaping. Make sure that the lid isn’t made from glass or plastic because it won’t allow UVB through. It’s best to get a screen lid. Avoid screens with fine mesh because it too will filter out UV. Look for a lid that has larger openings.

The bearded dragon got its name from the spiky flap of skin around its snout. The flap puffs up like a bristly beard when the bearded dragon feels threatened. But the bearded dragon is not nearly as ferocious as it, looks, preferring to run away rather than get into a fight. Natives of the Australian interior, these lizards are popular pets.
