Basic Bearded Dragon Care Guidelines

By: Sarah Munn

Reptiles make great pets for those with the proper mindset, and Bearded Dragons are among the most popular of those reptile pets. They are sturdy, just small enough, and eat simple, variant diets. With a lifespan of up to fifteen years, they can be a good long term pet, but only with the proper care and attention to the lifestyle and necessities of their diets.

Best Bearded Dragon basking light?

I have a good uvb, looking for a good basking light.

Link please.

Thanks, Sj

For the basking light you can simply use regular household light bulbs. Many of us are doing that since we actually read the boxes on both and it appears that we were paying high dollar for the ones with the reptile pictures on them when regular bulbs do the same thing. You do have to experiment with the wattage to get the right temp. On my 55 and 75 gallons in the summer I run a 100 watt bulb and nothing at night unless the air cond. is on and it goes below 60 degrees which rarely happens. In the winter I have to up that as my house stays cooler.

Is it illegal to keep roaches in province of Saskatchewan? I hear they are great for feeding lizards.?

I want to know if it would be legal for me to keep a colony of breeding roaches for food for my bearded dragon. I’ve heard they are very easy to keep and breed well.

Lol, it’s not the roaches they are protecting, it’s the ecosystem.

Exotic roaches are illegal in every province, it is a federal law. There are of course people that breed them but you won’t see them for sale openly in stores, expos etc. This link has a letter from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency discussing the ban.

Bearded Dragon Beardie
How do I get my bearded dragon used to a variety of food?

I have a baby bearded dragon along with a 3 month old beardie. The 3 month old is amazing. She eats everything from dead food, live food, to even pellets. Unfortunately, the baby beardie will only eat live crickets… I would like to teach him how to eat dead ones like my other beardie so that I don’t have to constantly buy separate food. Help?!
